…in a region that is renowned for its rich geological and historical character. Visit us and explore the surrounds or just chill out in the outback.
“We’ve been described as an ‘oasis’, a ‘hidden gem’ by some of our visitors (see our reviews) and this is exactly what Helen and I set out to achieve with this place.”
Petford is a very small rural community on the road between Mareeba and Chillagoe. In 1995 the Petford State School closed its doors for the last time and the grounds and facilities sold off to become a camping ground and accommodation for travellers. Sadly Covid caused the closure of the business until Shane and Helen took over the run-down facilities in 2022. After two and half years of hard work, they have transformed this place into an ‘oasis’. Buildings were completely restored and renovated, gardens established and their huge collection of historical artefacts put on display for all to appreciate.
Now, Helen and Shane can offer a comfortable retreat with a variety of unique accommodation options to travellers. Unique because the old school has been converted into a very comfortable bedroom. The Sydney 2000 Olympics has contributed to more accommodation and there is even a 70-foot train carriage that has beds for a family and a kitchen. The school hall and a demountable allow more space. Over 20 beds all together. And a hectare of camping grounds. All this under the clear starry skies of the Australian outback.
There is even a cricket pitch. This was, after all, and old school.
We can be a comfortable base for you to daily explore the diverse surroundings, full of geological and historical intrigue.
And come home to a prepared meal and chill out in the gardens.
“We want you to come back.”
